5 Scrum Framework Events for Agile Delivery

Do you really have to do all of the Scrum Events?

No, you don’t. If you want to take full advantage of the benefits of using the Scrum Framework though, you will. The Scrum Framework is a tried and true framework, and like it teaches, has adapted and improved over time. There is a reason that it is the most popular framework in agile methodology, used by over 50% of teams that have a dedicated framework.

First, lets cover each of the Events and their purpose:

  • Sprint - The Sprint is the heartbeat of Scrum. It is the timeboxed container for the rest of the events, lasting 1-4 weeks to ensure tight feedback loops and regular inspection of work and adaptation to work practices.

  • Daily Scrum -The Daily Scrum provides an opportunity for the Developers of the team to inspect and adapt their work as needed to ensure that they will reach their Sprint Goal.

  • Sprint Planning -The Sprint Planning is where all of the work for the Sprint is determined and committed to by the team.

  • Sprint Review -The Sprint Review provides the team an opportunity to show off the work that they completed during the Sprint with their stakeholders and gather feedback.

  • Sprint Retrospective -The Sprint Retrospective is for the Scrum Team to work together to inspect their quality and effectiveness as a team. During this time the team will cover what went well, what didn’t and how they solved their problems.

For full descriptions of each Event, check out the Scrum Guide.

If you choose to use some Scrum Events and not others, you will certainly not get the full benefit of using the framework. For teams that are working in Sprints, that’s a great start. Over the course of each Sprint (or quicker) you can introduce the concept of the rest of the Events to the team, as well as their purpose and time boxes to improve the agile practice of the team.
