The Scrum Values are NOT Defined

Did you notice that the Scrum Values are not explicitly defined in the Scrum Guide?

They are values with room for people & teams to define how they want to interpret and embody them. As an Agile Leader, gathering group consensus of what each of the values means can be a great exercise when developing Working Agreements or “team norms.” Additionally, determining what these values mean to you can help when communicating with people & teams.

Here are some of my own thoughts on each of them.

  • Focus - Focus means keeping your eye on the prize and staying on task to reach your goals.

  • Respect - Respect means acknowledging and celebrating each others skills, experience & humanity.

  • Openness - Openness means to welcome new information & provide as much context as possible.

  • Courage - Courage means to be brave, even when it is hard - and trust that taking action will be valuable.

  • Commitment - Commitment means to take responsibility & ownership for what you say you are going to do.
